Dr. Samuel Akonga, a development advocate and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region, has sharply criticized Araco Construction Limited for its failure to complete the Tanzui–Sokabiisa road project in the Bolgatanga Municipality.
The 30.85-kilometre road was expected to be completed within 18 months, according to the Ministry of Roads and Highways. However, five years down the line, the construction has not been completed.
Awarded to Araco Construction Limited in 2018, the road was intended to enhance connectivity between Tanzui, Sokabiisa, Sherigu, and neighbouring communities, facilitating trade, agriculture, and access to essential services. However, the project has faced significant delays, and the contractor has been absent from the site for extended periods.
Speaking on the Daybreak Upper East show on A1 Radio, Dr. Akonga expressed his frustration over the situation, highlighting the adverse impact on local residents who rely on the road for their daily activities. He called on the Ministry of Roads and Highways to intervene and ensure the contractor fulfils his obligations promptly.
“This is something that is dear to me. The contractor on the Tanzui–Sokabiisa road—Araco—if you are listening, Araco Construction Limited, I think you can do better.
“You realise that the Minister for Roads was in the Upper West Region and came this way. He was on the road for two days. You assembled people there. The Minister came, and you assured him that you were going to tar 40 kilometres of the road. What has happened?
“The man left, and nothing has happened—it’s all a fiasco. This is not about party. Yes, Araco is my party man, but that does not mean he should take us for granted. He should try and fix the road. I’m calling on him—by the end of this week, if we don’t see any tangible work done, we’ll hold a press conference and let the minister know what is happening. The man [Araco] deceived you.”
