As the Bawku West District prepares for a new chapter in local governance, a familiar name has been nominated to lead the charge—James Ayamwego. Appointed by President John Dramani Mahama as the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr. Ayamwego now awaits confirmation by members of the assembly. With a clear vision rooted in social justice, inclusivity, and sustainable development, he promises to usher in a new era of progress and unity for the district.

A Vision Grounded in Community Values

“My vision is to ensure that the development and growth of the Bawku West District reflect the government’s commitment to the people and also reflect the values of our party,” says Ayamwego. These values—equity, inclusiveness, and sustainable progress—are principles he believes are essential for transforming lives in the district.

To bring this vision to life, he has outlined a strategic plan that includes maintaining public safety through collaborations with national and local security agencies, boosting local economic development, strengthening resource mobilization, and enhancing environmental and human settlement management. He also places high emphasis on improving sanitation across communities.

At the core of his agenda is the belief that “what is needed is a cohesive, coherent, outcome-based strategy with a credible, broad-minded, avid, and likable leader.” With confidence in his leadership capacity, Ayamwego positions himself as that leader—someone who is not only politically experienced but also deeply rooted in the community he seeks to serve.

From Tanga to the Top: A Journey of Dedication

Born on April 10, 1979, and hailing from Tanga in the Bawku West District, Ayamwego’s rise to prominence is a tale of dedication and grassroots connection. His educational background spans from a Teacher’s Certificate at St. John Bosco’s Teacher Training College in Navrongo to an MPhil in Horticulture from the University for Development Studies in Tamale.

Professionally, he began his career in the classroom, teaching at Yelwoko JHS, before advancing through the ranks of the Ghana Education Service to become an Assistant Director I. His experience also includes a stint as a District Facilitator for Camfed, where he was responsible for overseeing operational and administrative programs that supported girls’ education.

A Lifelong Servant of the Party

James Ayamwego is no stranger to political work. A committed member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he has held several strategic positions within the Zebilla Constituency, including Constituency Secretary and Campaign Coordinator. He played a pivotal role in the 2024 general elections—organizing grassroots support, coordinating logistics, and directly contributing financial and material resources to ensure the party’s victory in the Zebilla Constituency.

Whether it was sponsoring meals for polling agents, donating branded T-shirts, or helping raise funds for campaign activities, Ayamwego’s contributions have gone beyond words. His actions have earned him the trust and respect of party members and community stakeholders alike.

A Leader for All

As a devout Christian from the Assemblies of God Church, Ayamwego connects naturally with the diverse cultural and religious landscape of Bawku West. He is a family man—married with four children—and is well known for his humility and approachability.

In his own words, he brings to the Office of DCE “considerable political experience, great communication skills, credible social background, incorruptible leadership, likable personality, and a spirit of unity.”

As Bawku West looks toward the future, James Ayamwego stands as a symbol of hope, progress, and service. His confirmation as DCE will not only mark a personal milestone but also signal the beginning of a leadership era centered on people-first policies and inclusive development.
