The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Anthony Namoo, has candidly admitted the party’s poor showing in the 2024 General Elections but emphasized deep appreciation for the resilience, commitment, and sacrifices of party members across the region.
Speaking during the NPP’s National Thank You Tour at the GNAT Hall in Bolgatanga and the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) Auditorium in Navrongo, Lawyer Namoo reflected on the party’s historical journey in the region.
Despite improved performances in 2008, 2016, and 2020, he noted that the 2024 election outcome marked a serious setback, with the NPP failing to win a single parliamentary seat and securing only 22.37% of the presidential vote.
Lawyer Namoo attributed the party’s decline primarily to political instability and violence, particularly in the Bawku Zone, which accounts for nearly 45% of the region’s voter population.
He recounted how the campaign was marred by bans from traditional authorities, destruction of NPP property, and targeted attacks that led to tragic deaths.
Among those killed were Assembly Member Dramani Hamidu, Deputy Nasara Coordinator Asaana Jamilu, and Peter Ndezuri, a party sympathizer from the Binduri Constituency. He further cited attacks in Garu and displacement in NPP-dominated areas due to political tension.
Beyond external challenges, Lawyer Namoo also pointed to internal sabotage, lamenting that some party members betrayed the cause by leaking strategies and openly campaigning for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In response, the Regional Disciplinary Committee has begun investigations and disciplinary actions against those suspected of anti-party behavior.
Despite the significant hurdles, Lawyer Namoo delivered a message of hope, calling for unity, sacrifice, and renewed commitment to the party’s future.
“We must not be discouraged. Instead, let us rebuild with faith, discipline, and a thankful heart,” he said.
Anchoring his message on the theme, “In All Things, Give Thanks to God” (1 Thessalonians 5:18), he urged members to remain steadfast and believe in the NPP’s capacity to bounce back stronger.
His remarks resonated with calls for healing and introspection, signaling the party’s intention to reorganize and reclaim its lost ground in the region.
