Betrayals from within weakened our position in Upper East Region – NPP’s Lawyer Namoo

The Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Lawyer Anthony Namoo, has blamed internal betrayal and widespread political violence for the party’s abysmal performance in the 2024 general elections in the region.

Speaking during the NPP’s National Thank You Tour at the GNAT Hall in Bolgatanga and later at the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) Auditorium in Navrongo, Lawyer Namoo revealed that some party members sabotaged internal strategies by leaking critical information and openly campaigning for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“This betrayal from within deeply weakened our position,” he said. “Some of our own people were working against us, handing our strategies to our opponents. How do you win under such circumstances?”

Beyond internal issues, he highlighted several external factors, including campaign bans imposed by some traditional authorities, destruction of party property, and targeted threats and violence that led to the deaths of key party members and sympathizers.

Among those killed were Dramani Hamidu (Assembly Member), Asaana Jamilu (Deputy Nasara Coordinator), and Peter Ndezuri, a party sympathizer—all in the Binduri Constituency.

He also recounted violent incidents in Garu and the displacement of residents in NPP-leaning communities due to politically motivated unrest.

Tracing the party’s electoral journey in the region, Lawyer Namoo noted that the NPP had made notable progress in the past, recording its best performance in 2008 and showing growth in the 2016 and 2020 elections.

However, the 2024 elections marked a drastic decline. The party failed to win a single parliamentary seat in the region and managed only 22.37% of the presidential vote.

He attributed this sharp decline largely to violence in the Bawku Zone, which accounts for nearly 45% of the voter population in the region.

Despite the defeat, Lawyer Namoo urged party members and supporters not to lose hope.

“The way forward is unity and gratitude,” he said. “If we learn from our mistakes and come together with one heart, we can rebuild our strength and return to power in 2028.”

His remarks serve as a call to action for healing internal divisions and restoring confidence in the party’s future in the Upper East Region.
