The Chief Executive Officer of Akuafo Nketewa, Dr. Charles Nyaaba, has called on the government to take bold steps in reforming Ghana’s agricultural landscape by adopting Burkina Faso’s efficient farming practices.

According to him, farming should no longer be seen merely as a way of life, but as a serious business venture that requires strategic support and sound policy interventions.

“Farming is no longer just a way of life; it is a business,” Dr. Nyaaba emphasized. “We call on the government to provide a sound, enabling environment that allows agribusinesses to thrive.”

Dr. Nyaaba made these remarks at the 2025 Preseason Planning & Farmers Awards Ceremony held in Bolgatanga, in the Upper East Region.

He urged the government to fulfill key agricultural promises, including the completion of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam, the reintroduction of subsidies, and the operationalization of Farmer Service Centres across the country.

He also called for the depoliticization of agriculture to ensure consistent and inclusive development.

Despite the challenges of the 2024 farming season—characterized by prolonged dry spells, high input costs, and marketing difficulties—Dr. Nyaaba revealed that Akuafo Nketewa supported over 55,000 farmers across northern Ghana.

These included 20,000 rice farmers, 5,000 soybean farmers, and 30,000 sorghum farmers.

Notably, more than 10,000 metric tonnes of sorghum were supplied to Guinness Ghana Brewery PLC.

The event, themed “Honoring Our Farmers: Advancing Food Security and Economic Growth through Active Youth Entrepreneurship and Agribusiness,” brought together over 500 participants, including farmers, aggregators, and development partners.

Several outstanding farmer groups were awarded knapsack sprayers and other essential logistics.

Dr. Nyaaba reaffirmed his organization’s commitment to transforming smallholder farming into a sustainable business model to ensure food security and youth inclusion in agriculture.
