MTN introduces Community Shops to address overcrowding at Upper East Regional office

In response to mounting concerns over long queues and overcrowding at MTN’s Upper East Regional Office in Bolgatanga, the telecom giant has announced a strategic intervention through the introduction of MTN Community Shops to bring services closer to customers.
This was disclosed by Nii Adotey Mingle, General Manager for MTN’s Northern Business District, during a recent Editors and stakeholder engagement.

For years, customers from far-flung communities such as Pusiga, Fumbisi, Paga, and even from Walewale in the North East Region, have journeyed to Bolgatanga for services like MoMo PIN resets, SIM registration, and other customer-related needs. Some customers reportedly spend the night in Bolgatanga just to be in line early enough to access services the next day.

Addressing the situation, Mr. Mingle said, “Today, we have what we call MTN Community Shops. These are franchise-style setups with local partners to expand our service reach. The aim is to decentralize and make services more accessible within districts and towns.”
He acknowledged that although the Community Shops initiative is operational, it is not yet at full capacity. “We are still in the process of recruiting more of them and ensuring that all verification, security checks, and system integrations are in place,” he noted.

Once fully functional, the Community Shops will offer essential services—previously only available at the regional office—to customers in their local communities, reducing the need for long-distance travel and easing pressure on the Bolgatanga branch.

Mr. Mingle assured customers that MTN is committed to improving service delivery and eliminating bottlenecks that hinder user experience across the region.

The move comes as part of MTN’s broader strategy to improve access and efficiency in customer service nationwide, especially in underserved areas.
