A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team in the Upper East Region, Isaac Ayemvoa, has raised concerns over the poor quality of road construction projects in the region and beyond, calling for greater accountability and diligence from contractors.
Speaking during an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Ayemvoa expressed disappointment with the standard of work delivered by many contractors handling road projects. He observed that some contractors, after being awarded contracts, often rush through their assignments and leave the sites without ensuring lasting quality.
One particular area of concern he highlighted is the condition of the “Victory” Road in Bolgatanga, where potholes have reportedly begun to reappear shortly after construction. According to him, this is due to the common practice of applying only a single coat before laying asphalt—a shortcut that undermines the durability of the road and leads to early deterioration.
Mr. Ayemvoa argued that investing public funds in such infrastructure projects should come with a commitment to long-term quality. He believes that doing a thorough and complete job from the onset would help avoid recurring maintenance costs and disruptions in the future.
“I don’t believe that we should sink a lot of money into a project of that nature. Let’s just do it once so that we’ll save ourselves from any trouble. Because the day you’ll be coming back to do it, you’ll have to take care of the potholes before giving it another coat.”
He further urged contractors to speak up if the funds allocated for projects are insufficient. In such cases, he said, open communication can help draw attention to the issue so that appropriate adjustments or additional support can be sought. This, he explained, would be far more productive than executing substandard work that may require redoing at a later date.
“I’m just pleading with the contractors—if you’ve been given money and it’s not enough, at least advocate; let us hear so we can also push it in our own capacity. If there is any variation, it should be done so the project can be executed properly. Otherwise, if shoddy work is done, we’re not likely to get value for what we are investing in,” he said.
