The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has assured the public that the government is taking decisive steps to address the ongoing strike by three major university staff unions.
The Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Technical University Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG), and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) declared an indefinite strike today, citing the government’s failure to implement a negotiated agreement signed six months ago.
Speaking on the development, Dr. Apaak acknowledged that the strike was an inherited challenge from the previous administration but emphasized that the current government is committed to resolving it.
“I can report that the government, through the Hon. Minister of Education, has swiftly intervened. Expect a positive response from the unions in due course. Though an inherited problem, it is being handled satisfactorily,” he stated.
The unions announced the industrial action at a press conference in Accra, expressing frustration over unmet demands, including improved conditions of service and the payment of arrears.
The strike threatens to disrupt administrative operations across public universities, compounding existing academic challenges.
While Dr. Apaak did not provide specific details on the timeline for resolution, his remarks signal optimism.
