For years, pupils of Tindonmolgo Primary School in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region endured an agonising daily routine—leaving the safety of their classrooms to walk long distances in search of clean drinking water.

This not only disrupted academic work but also tragically led to the death of a pupil who was struck by a motorcycle while crossing a road to access a community water source.

This heartrending incident caught the attention of COP Patrick Akolgo (Rtd), Chief Executive Officer of Blue-Sky Hotel and BlueWaves Radio 93.7 FM. Moved by the loss and the dangerous conditions the pupils faced daily, COP Akolgo personally funded and oversaw the construction of a hand pump borehole within the school premises.

“When attention was drawn to the need for a borehole—especially after the unfortunate death of a pupil while crossing to fetch water—I knew I had to act,” he said. “It is always my pleasure to support communities, especially in areas like water provision.”

The borehole has brought immediate relief to pupils, teachers, and parents alike. Headmaster Richard Ayine expressed deep gratitude, noting, “Our pupils will no longer have to cross roads or miss lessons just to drink water. We are overwhelmed by this gesture and promise to maintain the borehole properly.”

Emmanuel Ayamga Nsobila, Assembly Member for the area, echoed similar sentiments. He revealed that he had lobbied for nearly five years without success—until COP Akolgo intervened. “This initiative is a huge relief, and we assure you that it will be put to good use,” he said.

The new borehole not only resolves a long-standing water crisis but also significantly enhances the safety and academic focus of the pupils. It stands as a testament to COP Akolgo’s ongoing commitment to community development, joining a growing list of similar projects he has undertaken across the Upper East Region.

Visibly relieved and thankful, parents praised the gesture, saying the burden of worrying about their children’s safety and hydration during school hours has finally been lifted.
