The Community Engagement Coordinator for the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), Khadija Azumah Braimah, has issued a heartfelt call to the Government of Ghana to intensify efforts in addressing menstrual hygiene challenges faced by schoolgirls across the country.

Speaking during a radio discussion on Tinmaalgo Sanga on Friday, May 23, 2025, Khadija highlighted the daily struggles many girls endure due to the lack of changing rooms and access to sanitary pads.

“The absence of proper facilities forces some girls to miss school during their periods. This isn’t just a health issue; it’s an educational barrier,” she stated.

Khadija acknowledged the government’s recent initiative to provide free sanitary pads to schoolgirls, describing it as a commendable step. However, she maintained that more comprehensive measures are needed.

“While the free pads initiative is a great start, we cannot stop there. We need changing rooms in schools and stronger partnerships between the government and grassroots organizations like GAYO to ensure no girl is left behind,” she emphasized.

She further stressed that menstrual hygiene should not be viewed as a luxury but as a fundamental human right.

“Menstrual hygiene is a basic need. Prioritizing it means creating an environment where girls feel safe, stay in school, and learn with confidence,” Khadija said.

Her appeal adds to the growing national conversation around gender-sensitive infrastructure in schools and underscores the need for sustainable, community-based solutions to support girls’ education.
