Professor David Millar, founder of the Millar Institute for Transdisciplinary and Development Studies (MITDS), has expressed concern over the current state of education, where children are being “schooled” rather than truly “educated.”
Speaking as a guest speaker at the Bolgatanga District GNAT election, Prof. Millar lamented that most schools—particularly private ones—prioritize classroom instruction over playtime, despite the fact that play is an essential component of learning.
Prof. Millar noted that the current educational system is flawed, with children having little to no time for play due to the overwhelming number of classes and assignments.
“They don’t even allow the children to play. They don’t know that playing is part of learning,” he said.
He called for urgent reforms in the system, emphasizing the need for a better balance between academic work and recreational activities.
“I think we need to stand up now and say that those systems must reform,” he urged.
Prof. Millar’s concerns highlight the potential long-term implications of prioritizing excessive classwork over playtime. He warned that neglecting play may deprive children of essential learning experiences critical to their cognitive, emotional, and social development.
