A Ghanaian adventurer, Princess Umul Hatiyya, is using her passion for travel to transform lives by embarking on a 60-day TukTuk, popularly known as “Yellow Yellow,” expedition across Ghana to raise funds for the Savelugu School for the Deaf and the Ashanti School for the Deaf and Blind.
Speaking on A1 Radio during a stop in the Upper East Region, she said the campaign seeks to mobilize public support to renovate classrooms and dormitories in the two institutions.
According to her, conditions at the Savelugu School for the Deaf are particularly worrying.
“Currently, the school has been invaded by bats. The stench is unbearable, and children as young as four years old are living in dormitories where bats occupy the roofs,” she revealed.
She explained that the expedition combines advocacy with fundraising, urging Ghanaians to contribute any amount to support the cause.
“No amount is too small. If one million Ghanaians contribute one cedi each, we can raise one million cedis to improve the lives of these children,” she said.
The initiative continues a long tradition of philanthropy by the adventurer. In 2009, she cycled from Accra to Tamale over six days to raise funds for a six-classroom block for the Nouri Imam Primary School at Tuutingli in Tamale.
The campaign succeeded in attracting support from individuals and corporate organizations, leading to the construction of a classroom block, library, and toilet facilities for the school.
Looking back on that achievement, Princess Umul Hatiyya said it demonstrated the power of collective action.
“When people come together for a good cause, remarkable things can happen. That experience showed me that ordinary Ghanaians are willing to support initiatives that improve lives,” she noted.
She appealed to individuals, businesses, and development partners to support the current fundraising effort, saying it would help provide a more conducive learning environment for children with disabilities.
The public can support the project by donating through the MoMo number, 0246125329.
