A total of 19,523 candidates have been registered in the Upper East Region to sit for the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), scheduled to begin on Wednesday, 11 June and end on Wednesday, 18 June 2025.
According to data from the Upper East Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service, this year’s cohort comprises 8,842 boys and 10,681 girls from both public and private basic schools across the region. The candidates will write the exams at 90 designated examination centers that have been expanded to accommodate the large number of students.
However, the statistics also revealed a troubling trend. Twenty-one of the registered girls are heavily pregnant, while an additional 17 are already lactating mothers. This development has raised concerns among education stakeholders about the challenges facing adolescent girls in accessing uninterrupted education in the region.
While officials have not disclosed the specific support mechanisms in place for these girls, it is expected that school heads and invigilators will ensure a conducive and non-discriminatory environment for all candidates during the week-long exams.
The BECE is a critical milestone for final-year Junior High School students in Ghana, as it determines their placement into Senior High Schools and other second-cycle institutions.
Regional education authorities have called on candidates to approach the exams with confidence and discipline, and urged parents and guardians to provide the necessary emotional and logistical support for their wards throughout the examination period.
