The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has cautioned candidates sitting for the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to refrain from all forms of examination malpractice, particularly cheating during the exams.

Speaking during a monitoring visit to some BECE centers in the Bolgatanga Municipality, Mr. Akamugri emphasized the importance of honesty and discipline, urging candidates to focus on their work and avoid what he termed “giraffe behavior”—a colloquial expression for stretching one’s neck to copy from others.

“Upper East is noted for good behavior,” he said. “Looking at your faces, I can see that you are all good children of this region. When you get into the examination hall, endeavor to keep to yourselves. Don’t try to giraffe. Do you know what a giraffe is? When you stretch your neck like this—that’s giraffing. It’s a crime against the exams.”

He encouraged the candidates to do their best, avoid cheating, and trust in their preparations, assuring them that their honest efforts would be rewarded.

Mr. Akamugri also advised the candidates to take their time to carefully read and understand each question before answering. He stressed the need to avoid distractions and maintain full concentration throughout the examination period.

“Try to put in your best. Don’t cheat. At the end of the day, whatever you get, they will release for you,” he added.

The Minister, speaking on behalf of parents and guardians in the region, wished all the 19,523 registered BECE candidates in the Upper East Region a successful and incident-free examination.

The regional minister was accompanied by officials from the Ghana Education Service (GES), both municipal and regional, as well as the Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Roland Ayoo. Mr. Ayoo also used the opportunity to advise the candidates to remain calm and composed when they enter the examination hall.
