Peter Ayinbisa warns NDC against political witch-hunting and abuse of power

The Upper East Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Ayinbisa, has issued a strong caution to the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging them to desist from what he described as politically motivated prosecutions and the abuse of power.

Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Ayinbisa expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of political witch-hunting targeting former government appointees. He noted that these alleged actions, if unchecked, could severely undermine Ghana’s multiparty democratic principles.

“These days, the NDC wants to take every former appointee to court. They want to ensure that by 2028, almost every former official is behind bars and sent to Nsawam. That’s not acceptable in a democracy. We need tolerance,” he stated.

Mr. Ayinbisa emphasized that democracy must be rooted in fairness, justice, and due process, rather than retaliatory actions and political intimidation. He underscored the importance of civil procedures when addressing issues of accountability and misconduct.

“Now, we should use civil ways—inviting, arresting, and engaging in proper legal discourse. The system must work without harassment,” he added.

While reaffirming the NPP’s position against shielding individuals who are genuinely found culpable, Mr. Ayinbisa stressed that prosecutions must follow lawful procedures, not partisan interests. He cited the recent controversy involving Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, as an example of poor handling by authorities.

“Look at how Chairman Wontumi was handled. That was a clear case of mishandling. It does not reflect modern democratic standards,” he said.

Warning Against Political Retaliation in Ghana

The former Bongo District Chief Executive warned that political polarization and tit-for-tat governance could become the norm if mutual respect and political maturity are not upheld.

“Whether we like it or not, Ghana will continue to be governed by the NDC and the NPP. I have concluded that Ghana is a two-party state. If you target us now, when we return to power, we may be tempted to do the same. That cycle must end,” he cautioned.

Call for Responsible Leadership and Democratic Maturity

Mr. Ayinbisa urged the ruling NDC to use its political authority responsibly and refrain from arbitrary actions that could destabilize the nation’s democracy.

“I want to appeal to the NDC: you have the power, but let’s not abuse it. Power must be exercised with care, not in a capricious or arbitrary manner,” he stressed.

His remarks add to growing national discourse on the need for accountable governance in Ghana, political tolerance, and strengthening democratic institutions without compromising civil liberties or using the judiciary for partisan gains.
