Peter Ayinbisa, Upper East Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has acknowledged the efforts of the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in stabilizing fuel prices and maintaining relative economic progress. Speaking during an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Ayinbisa admitted that recent gains in the economy are commendable, but cautioned that they must be sustained to have long-term impact.
“It’s good. We are only praying that this should not be a nine-day wonder. It should be able to continue,” he said.
Fuel Prices and Cedi Stability in Ghana
While recognizing the reduction in fuel prices and signs of economic recovery under the NDC administration, Mr. Ayinbisa raised concerns about the Ghanaian cedi’s stability. He noted that although the cedi has shown strength in recent weeks, there are signals it could weaken again toward the end of June.
“The stability of the cedi is another issue. I’ve observed that the cedi is about to lose value again. Let’s watch it. I’m not a doomsayer, but toward the end of this month, you’ll see the dollar strengthening. I don’t want that to happen, but that’s what we’re likely to witness,” he warned.
Gold Reserves and Policy Continuity
Mr. Ayinbisa also emphasized that many of the economic policies currently yielding results, such as the Gold-for-Oil initiative, were introduced under the previous NPP administration. He credited the NPP for laying the foundation for some of the progress being experienced today.
He highlighted that Ghana’s gold reserves were significantly increased under the NPP government, a move he says has been critical to supporting the cedi and broader economic stability.
“Remember that it was the NPP that accumulated a huge amount of gold in this country. Since independence up to 2016, we had only 8 tons of gold reserved with the Bank of Ghana. By the time we left office, it had risen to about 30 tons,” he explained.
According to Mr. Ayinbisa, while the NDC deserves credit for continuing these initiatives, it is important to recognize the NPP’s contribution to the groundwork that is now bearing fruit.
A Call for Balanced Acknowledgement
He concluded by calling for a balanced national discourse that appreciates continuity in governance and recognizes the collaborative nature of economic development across administrations.
