The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has officially suspended its nationwide strike following a productive engagement with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health.

The decision to halt the industrial action was announced after extensive negotiations and the intervention of key stakeholders, marking a temporary resolution to the ongoing dispute over the implementation of the May 2024 Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The industrial action, which began on June 2, 2025, with members wearing red armbands and headbands, escalated into a total withdrawal of nursing and midwifery services by June 9, 2025. The strike stemmed from the GRNMA’s frustration with delays in the implementation of improved conditions of service for nurses and midwives.

In a press release issued on June 13, 2025, the GRNMA emphasized that the strike was not intended to disrupt healthcare delivery in Ghana, but to highlight the association’s long-standing concerns over poor working conditions and unmet commitments.

“As nurses and midwives, we do not take delight in seeing our patients suffer; however, we cannot take care of them when the system disregards us,” the statement read.

A “very fruitful” meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health held on June 12, 2025, was described as a key turning point, fostering mutual understanding and opening the door for an amicable resolution.

Following the meeting, the GRNMA announced the suspension of its strike action, instructing all members across the country to resume their duties starting Saturday, June 14, 2025.

The Association extended its gratitude to Parliament’s Health Committee, the Ghanaian public, and the media for their support, patience, and solidarity throughout the strike.

The GRNMA further assured its members that it remains committed to ensuring the full implementation of the Collective Agreement, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for June 26, 2025.
