As the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) heads to the polls, leading voices in Ghana’s media landscape have thrown their weight behind incumbent President Albert Dwumfour, calling for his retention to continue what many are describing as a transformative era for the Association.

Veteran pollster Ben Ephson made a passionate appeal to fellow journalists, urging them to vote for Mr. Dwumfour in the upcoming GJA elections.

“Fellow journalists, I’m Ben Ephson, and please, I urge you to vote for Mr. Albert Dwumfour to be retained as the president of the Ghana Journalist Association,” he said in a brief video message.

The support doesn’t end there. Seasoned journalist and managing editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., described the upcoming elections as a formality, suggesting the incumbent and his team have more than proven themselves.

“Frankly, I am unable to find fault with the current executives. They have done all that I expected them to do in the last three years,” Mr. Pratt said.

He commended the Dwumfour-led administration for several achievements, including the revamping of the International Press Centre, strengthening capacity-building initiatives for journalists, upholding press freedom and championing journalist welfare

“I vote for the retention of the current executives of the GJA,” Mr. Pratt added, using the hashtag #GJA #Elections to emphasize the importance of continuity.

Meanwhile, Ken Ashigbey, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications and a long-time advocate for media development, has also backed Albert Dwumfour’s re-election bid. Speaking to MyJoyOnline, he noted that Dwumfour has brought a “business-oriented mindset” to the GJA, helping to reposition the Association and make it more responsive to the needs of its members.

“He [Dwumfour] has also ensured more financial stability, diversified revenue streams, and strengthened institutional partnerships that are critical for the GJA’s long-term relevance,” Ashigbey noted.

Dwumfour, who was first elected in June 2022, has cited his achievements in media training, advocacy, and infrastructural development as reasons for seeking re-election. Under his leadership, the GJA has launched major initiatives including the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme (MCEP) and several safety campaigns to protect journalists from violence and harassment.

As the elections approach, the chorus for continuity appears to be growing louder. With endorsements from media veterans and industry stakeholders, Albert Dwumfour’s retention campaign is gaining significant traction, positioning him as the frontrunner to steer the Association for another term.
