As the world prepares to observe World Drug Day on June 26, 2025, under the global theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery,” Life Out of Alcohol and Drugs (LOAD) Ghana has launched a compelling public awareness campaign to highlight the dangers of drug abuse in Ghana and the urgent need for investment in recovery support services.
This year’s commemoration also marks LOAD Ghana’s 10th anniversary, making it a dual milestone of reflection and renewed commitment to combating substance abuse across the country.
Founded in the Upper East Region, LOAD Ghana has become a key player in the national fight against addiction and illicit drug use. Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tingmaalgo Sanga on June 24, the organization’s Chief Executive Director, Roger Abaah Atambire, shared a deeply personal account of his journey from addiction to advocacy. He recounted how his struggle with substance use led to his admission at Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, a transformative experience that ignited his passion for supporting others.
“Addicts face many challenges. The biggest is stigma—people don’t trust you, they judge you, and they distance themselves,” said Mr. Atambire. “Drug use not only destroys the user, it brings shame to families, breaks relationships, and even affects children. Many road accidents, robberies, and violent acts are drug-related. This is not just a personal problem; it’s a community-wide crisis.”
World Drug Day, officially recognized as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is celebrated each year to raise global awareness about the harmful effects of drug use and to promote evidence-based solutions for a drug-free society.
“This isn’t just an event,” Mr. Atambire emphasized. “It’s a moment to reflect on how far we’ve come, and more importantly, to have honest conversations about real solutions to addiction. We are here not just to fight drugs, but to rebuild lives, restore families, and educate our communities. The fight against drugs is a fight for our future.”
To commemorate both World Drug Day 2025 and LOAD Ghana’s decade-long journey, the organization has planned a series of community engagement and public education activities.
According to the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alika Titus, the celebrations will begin with a street procession through the Bolgatanga Municipality on June 26.
“We’ve organized a principal walk to draw public attention to the dangers of drug abuse,” said Mr. Alika. “We’ll also hold community games like dami and ludo to create a fun, relaxed atmosphere where people can learn. We expect dignitaries, including the Regional Minister, the Municipal Chief Executive, and community members from all walks of life to join. It’s a celebration with a clear and urgent message.”
As it marks 10 years of impactful work, LOAD Ghana continues to push for increased investment in drug prevention, accessible treatment, and long-term recovery programs, in line with the 2025 World Drug Day theme. The organization remains a beacon of hope for individuals and families facing the devastating impact of addiction in Ghana.
