Bolgatanga Senior High School (BIGBOSS) has emerged as the winner of the 2025 Energy Commission Senior High School Renewable Energy Challenge in the Upper East Region, after outperforming seven other competing schools in a highly competitive contest.

The participating schools included Bolga Girls SHS, Navrongo Technical Institute, Bawku SHS, Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ SHS, Sirigu Integrated SHS, St. John’s Integrated SHS, and Awe SHS.

Organized annually by the Energy Commission of Ghana in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, the competition aims to promote renewable energy education, innovation, and sustainability practices among students in second-cycle institutions across the country.

This year’s theme, “Sustainable Energy for a Healthier Future,” focuses on climate-smart solutions in food security, waste management, and health delivery.

BIGBOSS Presents ‘Smart Airborne Farm’

The winning project from BIGBOSS was titled “Smart Airborne Farm.” It features a dual-energy generator powered by solar panels and a car alternator, which together generate electricity. This energy is stored in rechargeable batteries and converted to AC power to operate farm machinery.

The project seeks to support smallholder farmers by providing affordable renewable energy and organic fertilizer, helping reduce farming costs and enhance food production and climate resilience.

Speaking on behalf of his teammates, Alebga Vania Ayinongre Amoah explained:

“Our project is a Smart Airborne Farm which uses energy from an automated mechanical energy generator. This generator has two ways of producing energy—solar and mechanical—and stores it in a battery for farm use.”

He added: “I’m very happy that my school won the regional competition. We’ve participated for several years, and just two years ago, we won the regional level. This year, we’ve taken it again. We hope to go all the way and win at the national level.”

Regional Winners Advance to National Stage

All 16 regional winners, including BIGBOSS, will proceed to the zonal competition, from which six schools will qualify for the national finals later in 2025.

Speaking to the media, Julius Nkansah-Nyarko, Senior Manager for Renewable Energy Regulations at the Energy Commission, commended the students for their creativity, innovation, and problem-solving approaches to sustainable energy challenges.

“These projects show that our young people have what it takes to lead Ghana’s future in clean energy and sustainability,” he said.
