The General Manager of A1 Radio and Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Chairman hopeful for the Upper East Region, Ebo Bruce Quansah, is calling for the institution of a special day dedicated to celebrating and empowering women in media across the region.
Mr. Quansah believes that although women in the Upper East media landscape are significantly fewer than their male counterparts, they possess immense potential to drive change, inspire youth, and nurture future talent. He proposed that a dedicated “Women in Media Day” would allow these professionals to take over media platforms and engage in impactful community outreach activities such as school visits and advocacy campaigns. These efforts, he emphasized, could spark interest among young girls and aspiring media practitioners.
“These women are not many compared to the men. If you give them a day to run their activities, I’m telling you, they may go to schools and do advocacy. They may touch the hearts of some younger ones who would like to come into the media and work. They may inspire inexperienced individuals — even teachers — with a passion for communication to join the profession. Give them the chance,” he said during an interview on A1 Radio.
The GJA Chairmanship hopeful further stressed the need for inclusivity and visibility for female journalists, broadcasters, and producers. By amplifying their voices and creating leadership opportunities, he believes more women will be encouraged to pursue careers in radio, television, journalism, and digital media.
“The few girls or women we have — let’s give them the chance to shine. Once they shine, others will see them and be motivated to join. But if we’re not giving them the platform, how can we expect them to excel?” he added.
As part of his vision for the Ghana Journalists Association in the Upper East Region, Mr. Quansah pledged to work closely with station managers, editors, and programme heads to foster a more supportive environment for young journalists, particularly women. He said mentorship, capacity-building, and equal opportunity are pillars of journalistic excellence and vital to building a vibrant, ethical, and inclusive media ecosystem.
“I want to prioritize mentorship and skills development. We must open doors for the younger generation, especially women, to thrive in the media space,” he stated.
