The outgoing Upper East Regional Chairperson of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Madam Ivy Betur Naaso, has called on newly elected executives to prioritize the completion of the GNAT hotel project in the Upper East Region and to intensify support for teachers affected by regional instability.
Speaking at the 7th Quadrennial GNAT Delegates Conference held in Bolgatanga, Madam Naaso emphasized that the hotel project, once completed, will become a key asset to boost the financial sustainability of the Association and improve services to its members.
“The hotel, when completed, will not only generate income but also provide affordable lodging and training facilities for teachers in the region,” she stated.
Madam Naaso also urged the incoming leadership to remain attentive to the welfare of teachers, particularly those affected by the prolonged Bawku conflict and resource limitations within the education sector.
“The conflict in Bawku is taking a toll on our members. Teachers are working under extreme tension, and we need to do more to protect and support them,” she appealed.
The two-day GNAT Upper East Regional Conference brought together teacher delegates from all districts across the region under the theme: “Educating Africans Fit for the 21st Century: The Role of Policymakers and Unions in Ghana.”
Participants engaged in discussions on teacher motivation, capacity-building, and education policy reforms, with a focus on identifying solutions to the challenges facing education delivery in Northern Ghana. The conference also served as a platform to elect new regional executives tasked with steering the affairs of GNAT in the coming years.
Madam Naaso, who served as regional chairperson for four years, expressed confidence that the new leadership will build on existing progress to advance teacher welfare, improve educational outcomes, and advocate for government support for teachers in underserved regions.
“We have made great strides, but more needs to be done to ensure that teachers are supported, well-resourced, and motivated to deliver quality education,” she concluded.
