The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Upper East Region has seized and detained more than 700 cans and pouches of the Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix following a nationwide recall triggered by reports of product contamination.
According to Abel Ndego, Acting Regional Head of the FDA in the Upper East Region, the affected products—specifically the 210g and 400g cans—exhibited signs of bloating, prompting swift regulatory and security action to protect public health. The recall also includes certain batches of the 380g and 1.05kg tomato mix pouches with expiry dates between January 20 and January 24, 2027.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with A1 Radio, Mr. Ndego explained that intensified surveillance has been rolled out across markets and retail outlets in the region to ensure that all compromised products are swiftly removed from circulation.
“We are working tirelessly to trace and retrieve every affected product from store shelves, markets, and households. No compromised product will be left in the market,” Mr. Ndego assured, adding that the public must remain vigilant and report any suspicious food items.
The FDA Ghana has strongly advised consumers not to consume the affected Tasty Tom tomato mix products. Instead, individuals in possession of these items are encouraged to return them to the nearest FDA office, licensed distributors, or directly to Nutrifoods Ghana Limited’s Tema office.
Nutrifoods Ghana Limited, the manufacturer of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, confirmed the nationwide recall in an official statement signed by the company’s Business Head, Jay Jagadip Anjaria. The company acknowledged the inconvenience caused to consumers and clarified that production has been halted since January 2025 to facilitate regulatory inspection and to ensure full compliance with safety and quality standards.
“Our facility has been under thorough inspection, and we are cooperating fully with the FDA to address all safety concerns. We regret the inconvenience caused and reaffirm our commitment to consumer health and product quality,” the statement read.
This development comes at a time when concerns over food safety in Ghana are growing. The FDA reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and upholding food safety standards across the country. Consumers are urged to always check product expiry dates, inspect packaging conditions, and report any abnormalities to the FDA through its regional offices or toll-free numbers.
The ongoing Tasty Tom tomato mix recall has spotlighted the crucial role of the FDA in ensuring the safety of food products sold across Ghana, particularly in rural and underserved areas like the Upper East Region.
