The Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Adongo, has formally written to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) requesting the construction of an ultramodern sports stadium in the Upper East Regional capital.
Mr. Adongo disclosed the move in an interview with Joshua Asaah on Bolga FM, where he clarified that his request was not for the rehabilitation of the existing deteriorated facility or the construction of an AstroTurf, but for a full-scale stadium comparable to the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale or the Accra Sports Stadium.
“Bolgatanga already has an AstroTurf, so there is no need for me to ask for another one. What we need is a proper sports stadium that can help the youth develop their talents, promote sports, and create avenues for community engagement,” the MP explained.
The current stadium, built in the 1970s, has suffered decades of neglect and now lies in a state of disrepair. Its pitch, stands, and changing rooms are unusable, while the facility has become a haven for miscreants, who use it as a place for defecation, smoking, and other illicit activities.
In his request, Mr. Adongo urged GNPC to honor its corporate social responsibility mandate by investing in the stadium project as part of efforts to bridge regional development disparities. He expressed confidence that the project would revitalize sports in the region and provide safer, structured opportunities for young people to harness their potential.
