Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) has launched a Sustainable Energy Centre (SEC) as part of its vision to become a leading hub for technology and innovation in northern Ghana.

The centre, established under the broader Sustainable Construction and Energy Efficiency Centre, is expected to champion renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable technologies in line with Ghana’s energy transition agenda, ECOWAS renewable energy targets, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

At the launch, the Acting Dean of the School of Engineering, Prof. Callistis Tengan, hailed the SEC as a milestone achievement and a timely response to the global demand for sustainable energy solutions. He said the Centre would nurture innovation, foster collaboration, and equip students, faculty, and industry partners with practical tools to address real-world challenges.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter Osei Boamah, described the initiative as a bold step toward merging technical excellence with ecological responsibility. He noted that the SEC reflects BTU’s commitment to education as the cornerstone of sustainable development and emphasized its role in addressing SDGs focused on clean energy, sustainable cities, and climate action.

The event brought together Heads of Departments, student leaders, and other stakeholders, with the leadership of the School of Engineering and Built Environment pledging full support to the SEC’s vision of becoming a Centre of Excellence in the Upper East Region and beyond.

The Sustainable Energy Centre is expected to empower students, researchers, and industry professionals with the knowledge and tools needed to drive Ghana’s green transformation—turning sustainability from a mere slogan into a practical standard.
