The Upper East Regional Taekwondo team delivered an outstanding performance at the just-ended 15th Korean Ambassador’s Cup in Accra, winning five medals.

The team presented eight athletes—two seniors, one junior, and five cadets—and showcased remarkable skill, improving on last year’s two-medal haul by securing two gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.

In the senior category, the team featured Abdul-Karim Hanan Danibu (-68kg) and Akurigo Bashiru Awindoo (-80kg). The competition, which began on 21st August 2025 for seniors and 22nd August 2025 for juniors and cadets, provided a platform for athletes to demonstrate their training and skill. Abdul-Karim Hanan Danibu won his first bout but lost the second, ending his medal hopes. His teammate, Akurigo Bashiru Awindoo, was eliminated after losing his first match, leaving the Upper East without medals in the senior category.

In the junior category, Patience Ali Chakoja, the only female athlete and a second-year student of Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School, earned the team’s first gold medal in the poomsae competition. She went on to secure a bronze medal in the kyorugi (fighting) event after defeating three opponents.

The cadet division, for athletes aged 10 to 14 years, also produced remarkable results. Owusu Ferguson Corsah claimed the second gold medal for the team in the poomsae category, outshining more than sixteen competitors. He later added a silver medal in the under-45kg kyorugi event. Abdul Haqq Timmi, a student of Great Victory Academy, also made the region proud by winning a bronze medal in the poomsae category. Other cadet athletes, including Obed Batuure Yeli-Ahig of Dream School, Abdul Ghaffar Tetera of Great Victory Academy, and Lord Nsobila of Golden Step International School, put in strong performances but could not make it to the medal zone.

With the exception of Abdul-Karim Hanan Danibu, who competed in the tournament for the second time, all the other athletes were making their debut at this championship. In the end, the Upper East Regional Taekwondo Association proudly returned home with a total of five medals—two gold, two silver, and one bronze.
