A retired mortuary attendant of the Upper East Regional Hospital, Daniel Alhassan Azaah, has made a passionate appeal for modern equipment to be provided to mortuaries to ensure effective and dignified services.

Speaking on Bolga FM’s Tinmaalgo Sanga morning show on Friday, August 29, 2025, Mr. Azaah noted that mortuaries in the Upper East Region, particularly at the Upper East Regional Hospital, continue to operate without essential facilities such as autopsy tables, dissecting tools, and other critical instruments.

“During my days as a mortuary attendant, we struggled with the lack of basic autopsy instruments. Tools needed for conducting post-mortem examinations were often not available or were inadequate. This made the work extremely difficult,” he revealed.

With over two decades of service, Mr. Azaah emphasized that mortuary workers play a vital yet often overlooked role in the healthcare system. “Mortuary staff handle corpses with dignity and provide crucial support to grieving families. They must be equipped with the right modern tools to ensure safety, efficiency, and respect for the dead,” he stressed.

He further noted that the work of mortuary attendants demands not only technical expertise but also compassion and emotional intelligence. “Dealing with grieving families is emotionally draining. It takes empathy and resilience to comfort them while maintaining professional responsibilities,” he explained.

Mr. Azaah concluded with an appeal to government, philanthropists, and development partners to urgently support mortuaries in the region. “It is essential that mortuaries and healthcare facilities are prioritized—for the safety of workers and the dignity of the deceased.”
