The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bawku West, James Ayamwego, has criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying the party cannot point to a single completed electrification project in the district over the past eight years.
Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Ayamwego revealed that his own community remains without electricity, a situation he described as a stark example of the rural electrification challenges facing the area.
“It’s a major challenge because my own community has no lights. We are not connected to the national grid. That alone should tell you the extent of the problem we face with rural electrification,” he said.
The DCE claimed that projects initiated under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government were abandoned after contractors left the sites, leaving many communities in darkness. He alleged that during the NPP administration’s tenure, not a single new community in Bawku West was connected to the grid.
“This gap in rural electrification is a serious setback for us. Many of our communities are still waiting for power, and it is affecting development across sectors, including education, healthcare, and local businesses,” he explained.
Despite his criticism, Ayamwego assured residents that he is working with relevant authorities to push stalled projects forward and ensure that unconnected communities in Bawku West eventually gain access to electricity.
He appealed for stronger support from the central government and stakeholders, stressing that access to reliable power is critical for socio-economic transformation in the district.
