The Upper East Region is mobilising for the first monthly National Sanitation Day exercise scheduled for Saturday, 4 October 2025, as part of the government’s renewed “Clean Up Ghana” campaign. Starting at 7:00 a.m. and ending at 10:00 a.m., the exercise will be held across all districts and municipalities, under strict regional directive.
A communique from the office of the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Akamugri Donatus Atanga, directs that no shops or stores at the clean-up sites shall open until the exercise concludes at 10:00 a.m. This will ensure full participation and prevent distractions.
This regional mobilization aligns with the national policy shift: Ghana will now observe National Sanitation Day on the first Saturday of every month, replacing the earlier practice of last-Saturday clean-ups. The reintroduction of the policy responds to the renewed urgency over environmental sanitation, disease prevention, and civic responsibility.
At the national level, President John Dramani Mahama, during the relaunch, emphasized that the month-end practice had lost traction and called for a more disciplined and sustainable approach. He described the initiative as a renewed social contract between citizens and government and underscored the need for accountability. He also donated essential sanitation tools to volunteer groups to catalyze local action.
In the Upper East Region, all assemblies are expected to deploy environmental health officers, waste contractors, youth volunteers, civic groups, and traditional leaders. Stakeholders will work together to clear gutters, weed public spaces, desilt drains, and remove refuse.
