At least 45 people have lost their lives in road crashes in the Upper East Region between January and August 2025, according to data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA).

Regional Public Relations Officer of the NRSA, John Quarshie, said a total of 72 crashes were recorded during the eight-month period, resulting in 105 injuries.

“From January to August 2025, we have recorded 72 road crashes in the Upper East Region. These crashes have led to 105 injuries and 45 deaths. These are alarming figures,” he said in an interview with Bolga FM.

Mr. Quarshie revealed that nearly 90 percent of the accidents involved motorcycles, largely caused by over-speeding and reckless riding.

“These are people who were breadwinners, leaving home with both hands but returning with one hand—or not at all—because of negligence, speeding, or inconsiderate driving,” he lamented.

He expressed deep concern over the trend and called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to curb the menace. The NRSA is urging all road users to adopt defensive driving habits and comply with traffic regulations to help reduce crashes in the region.
