The Upper East Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into an incident in which a police officer was assaulted by a commercial tricycle rider at Garu in the Upper East Region.

The incident, which occurred on October 6, 2025, took place during a stop-and-search operation conducted by a police team and Community Protection Assistants (CPAs) along the Garu–Nakpanduri road.

According to a police statement signed by Chief Inspector Abdul-Rahman Sumalia of the Public Affairs Department, the team intercepted a tricycle loaded with sacks of groundnuts, with several passengers sitting on top of the goods. When the officer on duty instructed the rider to stop and park properly for inspection, the rider became aggressive and physically attacked the officer.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene on his tricycle after the assault.

“Efforts are underway to arrest the tricycle rider and ensure he faces the full rigours of the law,” the statement said.

The police command condemned the attack, describing it as an affront to law enforcement and public safety. It further cautioned the public, especially commercial vehicle operators, to cooperate with officers during official duties to avoid unnecessary confrontations.

The statement reassured residents of Garu and its environs that the police remain committed to maintaining law and order and that anyone found obstructing officers in the performance of their duties will be dealt with according to law.
