The Youth Harvest Foundation Ghana (YHFG) has commemorated this year’s International Day of the Girl-Child with a large-scale empowerment drive targeting teenage girls in selected Junior High Schools within the Bawku Municipality.
The initiative, held under the global theme “The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead: Girls on the Frontlines of Crisis,” saw the Foundation donate hundreds of sanitary products and organize interactive girl-talk sessions on menstrual hygiene and reproductive health.
The programme reached five schools — Daduri R/C JHS (38 girls), Methodist JHS A (73), Methodist JHS B (106), St. Anthony’s R/C JHS (25), and Yakut Girls’ Model JHS (62).
Speaking to the media, Madam Abigail Adumolga, a representative of YHFG, said the outreach formed part of the Foundation’s continuous efforts to empower adolescent girls, particularly in conflict-affected areas like Bawku. She emphasized that the engagement was designed to help girls understand their bodies, manage menstrual hygiene effectively, and exercise their sexual and reproductive rights.
“The International Day of the Girl-Child is a moment to reflect on the unique challenges facing young girls, particularly in vulnerable communities, and to provide them with the right information to make informed life choices,” Madam Adumolga stated.
The Upper East Regional Director of the Department of Children, Mrs. Georgina Aberese-Ako, encouraged the girls to uphold self-respect and personal safety, emphasizing that their education and future aspirations must remain their top priorities.
Additionally, Mary Azika from the Ghana Health Service in Bolgatanga facilitated practical sessions on menstrual and reproductive health, urging the students to abstain from early sexual activity to protect their health and future opportunities.
The event forms part of YHFG’s broader mission to promote adolescent health, gender equality, and girls’ empowerment in deprived and crisis-prone communities across the Upper East Region.
