The Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Morris Korah, has expressed disappointment that the region still lacks a functional hostel or hotel facility for teachers, despite efforts he initiated during his first term in office.
Speaking in an interview on A1 Radio, Mr. Korah recalled that upon assuming office in 2017, he identified the absence of a decent accommodation facility for teachers and visitors as a major challenge.
“It is disheartening that teachers in the region still do not have a hotel facility despite my initiation during my first tenure of office between 2017 and 2021 as the regional chairman of GNAT,” he lamented.
According to him, the Upper East Region remains the only GNAT branch in the country without a functional hostel facility to serve teachers and the general public. Determined to change that, he and his executive team lobbied for the construction of a modern hostel in Bolgatanga. The project, he noted, started with great promise but unfortunately remains incomplete.
“During my first tenure, we were able to put up the basement of the hall, which can accommodate between 40 and 50 people, and fitted it with air conditioners. We also built a fence wall and purchased a generator to support the facility,” Mr. Korah explained.
He added that there are about ten existing hostel rooms, but they have deteriorated over the years due to neglect and lack of maintenance.
In his current tenure, Mr. Korah said completing and renovating the project has become a top priority to ensure teachers have a comfortable place to stay when visiting Bolgatanga for training, workshops, or personal engagements.
“If we can’t do it best, we should at least do it better so that the teachers’ welfare is catered for,” he emphasized.
He also revealed plans to enhance the facility’s environment through landscaping, tree planting, and outdoor spaces for recreation and social events such as weddings and conferences.
“We want to make it a place where teachers can find solace — and one that the public can also use for gatherings,” he said.
Mr. Korah reaffirmed his commitment to improving teachers’ welfare and called on stakeholders and GNAT members to support the completion of the project for the benefit of all.
