The Talensi District Chief Executive (DCE), John Millim Nabwomya, has reaffirmed the vital role of the District Assembly in driving effective local governance and development.

Speaking at the district’s second ordinary meeting held on Thursday at the Talensi District Assembly Conference Hall, Mr. Nabwomya described the General Assembly as the highest decision-making body mandated to ensure efficient administration and accountability.

“The General Assembly is the final decision-making body clothed with powers to provide leadership for the effective and efficient running of the Assembly,” he said, citing Section 20 (2) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) to emphasize the Assembly’s constitutional authority.

Financial Performance

Reporting on the district’s financial performance from June to October 2025, the DCE disclosed that the Assembly had mobilized GH₵1,268,089.59 out of its targeted GH₵2,100,000.00, representing 60.38% of its Internally Generated Fund (IGF) target for the year. He expressed optimism that the district would meet or exceed the target by the end of the year.

On external funding, Mr. Nabwomya revealed that as of September 2025, the Assembly had received GH₵6,089,350.07 from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) out of an expected GH₵18,299,604.19. The funds, he said, were partly used to clear outstanding debts.

Peace and Security

The DCE commended the District Security Council (DISEC) for maintaining peace and security in the district. He specifically cited the council’s prompt intervention in resolving conflicts in Guborigu and Arigu, issues surrounding TAMCI, and efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities in Santeng.

Education and Health

On education, Mr. Nabwomya reported the successful handing over of the Guborigu Kindergarten block to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the completion of 3-unit classroom blocks at Baapelug and Gatusi, alongside the distribution of furniture and exercise books to schools.

In the health sector, the Assembly has handed over a site for the construction of a CHPS compound with three nurses’ quarters at Tindongo. A similar project at Kulipeliga is nearing completion, while a 5-unit office complex for decentralized departments is currently under construction in Tongo.

Agriculture and Food Security

Recognizing agriculture as the economic backbone of the district, employing nearly 70 percent of the workforce, the DCE reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving productivity through programs such as Modernizing Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) and the Feed Ghana Initiative.

Under the Food Systems Resilience Project, the Assembly is supporting farmers to cultivate 40 acres of tomatoes, while 6,000 farmers have been registered to benefit from various agricultural support programs. Mr. Nabwomya also announced that preparations were underway for the 2025 Farmers’ Day Celebration in the district.

Sanitation and Community Development

The DCE commended Assembly members who participated in the recent clean-up exercise and urged continued community participation. He reminded members that the next sanitation exercise would take place on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Pwalugu, stressing that such efforts were essential to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
