The Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly has proposed the desilting and rehabilitation of several community dams to enhance water storage capacity for dry season farming and livestock rearing.

District Chief Executive for the area, Stephen Aeke Akurugo, made the announcement during the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly held on Friday, October 31, 2025, at the District Assembly Conference Hall in Paga.

Presenting the Executive Committee’s report, Mr. Akurugo said the move formed part of measures to strengthen the district’s climate resilience and ensure sustainable water availability for agricultural and pastoral activities during the dry season.

“The Assembly has resolved and recommended that the Kandiga, Bembisi, Nyongo, Katiu, and Nania dams, among others, should be desilted, while the Wolingu dam embankment be rehabilitated to store water for dry season pastoral use,” the DCE stated.

He explained that the decision followed consultations with the statutory sub-committees of the Assembly, adding that the initiative was critical in supporting the livelihoods of farmers and herders who depend heavily on water resources for their economic activities.

Beyond water infrastructure, the Executive Committee also presented several other recommendations, including the renovation of the Nyangania CHPS Compound and Primary School, the construction of a 3-unit classroom block for Agandaa Primary School, and the extension of electricity to Atiyorum Primary and Junior High School.

The Assembly also proposed the drilling of a borehole for the Agandaa CHPS Compound, construction and renovation of toilet facilities across schools and public spaces, and the formation of a five-member committee to review the functionality of sub-structures within the district.

Mr. Akurugo reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to improving social amenities, boosting agricultural productivity, and ensuring that development projects align with the district’s 2026 Annual Action Plan.

He commended Assembly Members, heads of departments, and development partners for their continued collaboration in driving progress across the Kassena-Nankana West District.
