Residents of Solig, a farming community in the Nangodi Electoral Area of the Nabdam District, can now access clean and safe drinking water for the first time in decades, thanks to a newly drilled borehole provided by Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, through its sister company Cardinal Resources Ghana Limited.
Before the intervention, the community of about 300 inhabitants depended on an old, uncovered well that was their only source of water. The well, which had served the community for decades, was heavily infested with algae and posed serious health risks to residents.
Speaking at a brief ceremony to hand over the borehole, Maxwell Wooma, Community and Social Responsibility Superintendent at Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, said the project demonstrates the company’s commitment to improving the lives of communities within its operational areas.
“As a company, we believe that as we grow, our communities must grow with us. This borehole is a testament to our shared value principle — ensuring that our presence brings positive change to the people,” Mr. Wooma said.
He explained that Cardinal Namdini and its exploration subsidiary, Cardinal Resources Ghana Limited, have operated in the Nangodi area for several years and continue to invest in community development projects, even before the commencement of full mining operations.
“Two years ago, we supported the Nangodi Health Centre with hospital beds and mattresses, and also fixed another borehole in the central part of the town. This new borehole in Solig was provided following a request from the Honourable Assembly Member,” he added.
Mr. Wooma emphasized that access to potable water is a basic human right and essential to the dignity and well-being of every community. He also hinted that the company will soon roll out additional initiatives, including sponsorship of the District Best Farmer Awards, to promote agriculture and support livelihoods.
The Assembly Member for the Nangodi Electoral Area, Henry Yamga, expressed profound gratitude to the company, noting that the project has brought great relief
the community.
“Before this borehole, people relied on an unsafe well. Children had to wake up early to fetch water before school, which made many of them late. The water wasn’t safe, but we had no other option. Now, this borehole has changed everything,” he said.
Mr. Yamga assured that the community will take proper care of the facility and ensure its maintenance.
A resident, Madam Kurugmah Nyaaba, also shared her excitement, recounting how the struggle for water used to disrupt household chores and affect children’s education.
“We used to walk long distances for water every morning. The well water was not safe, but we had no choice. We are truly grateful to Cardinal Namdini for coming to our aid,” she said.
The borehole was drilled and fitted by Azeda Construction Limited, which has provided a six-month warranty to fix any faults that may occur. The project forms part of Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited’s broader Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) agenda to promote sustainable development and strengthen community relations in its operational areas across the Upper East Region.
