Future for Africa installs two boreholes to ease water crisis in Bawku West

Future for Africa, a local NGO working to improve access to essential services in northern Ghana, has installed two hand-pump boreholes to support water-stressed communities in the Upper East Region. The intervention comes at a time when many rural communities continue to grapple with severe water shortages, worsened by the effects of climate change.

Samuel Nayang, Programmes Lead at Future for Africa, said access to clean water remains one of the region’s most persistent development challenges. “Access to clean drinking water is still a major challenge for many rural communities in the Upper East Region,” he said. “With climate change intensifying every year, a lot of the open water sources people depend on are either drying up or getting contaminated.”

As part of the organization’s 2025 target, two new boreholes have been completed—one in the Soogo-Adasiga community and another in Agigi, a border community in the Bawku West District. Mr. Nayang said the facilities were selected based on urgent need. “Some of these communities had no reliable water source for months,” he explained. “We needed to act quickly to make sure families have safe water to drink.”

Residents also received education on protecting the new water systems. “Part of our work is ensuring that the water points last,” Mr. Nayang said. “So we trained community members on how to safeguard the boreholes and manage water properly from source to sip.”

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with Solida’raid, a humanitarian association at ICN Business School in France, and with support from Naiara Olaizola Lekuona, a former volunteer and ambassador for Future for Africa from San Sebastián. Mr. Nayang noted that their contribution was critical.

“This project would not have been possible without our partners. Their support made a real difference for these communities.”
