The Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central, Simon Aworigo, is set to award educational scholarships worth GHC 600,000 to 300 students in the constituency, marking the second phase of his large-scale educational support initiative. The first phase of the MP’s scholarship programme supported more than 50 students through the GETFund and other national scholarship schemes.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Aworigo said the upcoming awards ceremony—scheduled for Thursday at the St. John Bosco’s College of Education auditorium—will provide financial support for school fees, books, and other academic needs.
“So on Thursday, we will be awarding students who have applied for support. I will be looking at around 300 of them receiving their awards, with different sums of money to support their education,” he stated. “It has taken some time because we needed to carefully assess the students to make sure they are truly in need. We are lifting people from the bottom and helping them move upward.”
He explained that this new batch forms just one category of the scholarship schemes he is currently facilitating. “At the moment, I’m dealing with three sets of scholarships—GETFund, the Kumasi Technical University arrangement, and the Scholarship Secretariat. In all, about 70 to 80 students benefit from these annually,” he added.
Beyond scholarships, the MP highlighted additional educational development initiatives. As part of ongoing activities in the constituency, he will donate 10 specially programmed computers to Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ Senior High School to enhance ICT education. The installation will be done by GITEC.
“In today’s world, digital skills are essential. Gone are the days when you finish university and then look for a short course to learn what a keyboard or mouse is,” he said. “We must equip our young girls at this early stage.”
Mr. Aworigo also commended President John Mahama for ensuring timely and improved disbursement of the District Assemblies Common Fund, which he said is enabling MPs and local assemblies to deliver meaningful development to their communities.
