The Team of Hope, a local non-governmental organisation providing free medical surgeries in rural communities of the Upper East Region, has successfully conducted 231 operations during a five-day medical outreach.
According to the medical team, 142 surgeries were performed at Sandema Municipal Hospital, while 89 took place at Fumbisi District Hospital.
The outreach addressed a wide range of surgical conditions, including hernias, hydroceles, goitres, breast lumps, fibroids, ovarian tumours, and other gynaecological complications such as uterine and vaginal prolapse.
Lead surgeon and coordinator of the initiative, Dr. Benjamin Akinkang, said the number of cases highlights the growing surgical needs in underserved communities.
“This year, we treated 231 patients across both centres. Since we began in 2015, we have operated on over 6,000 patients,” Dr. Akinkang said, describing the achievement as unprecedented in the region.
With more than 6,000 surgeries conducted since its inception, the organisation continues to play a vital role in bridging healthcare gaps in rural Ghana. Dr. Akinkang noted that sustained impact will depend on improved logistical support and resources.
