In communities across Winkongo, Tongo and nearby areas, one woman is quietly driving a grassroots movement to improve education and women’s health. Freda Nsobila Amisonga, founder of the Amisonga Impact Foundation, has spent the past year expanding a community-based initiative focused on student support, women’s health and basic learning resources.

Listening to Students First

On Sept. 30, 2024, Amisonga visited Christ the King JHS in Winkongo and St. Theresa’s JHS in Tongo to hold one-on-one conversations with students. She said the discussions helped her understand why some children drop out and the challenges they face, including poverty, long walking distances, lack of learning materials and low motivation.

“You cannot support a child if you don’t first understand their struggles,” she said.

Health Outreach Saves Lives

A month later, in October 2024, the Foundation organized a free breast screening and health education session for women in Winkongo and Tongo. A total of 245 women were screened. Four were identified with complications and were supported to receive further medical care.

“We saved four women from what could have become a silent tragedy,” Amisonga said.

Continuing Support for Schools

On May 16, 2025, she donated exercise books to all students at Christ the King JHS and provided pens for BECE candidates. She also led a session on study habits and exam readiness.

Three days later, the Foundation supplied learning materials for eight subjects at Yindongo DA/KG Primary School.

On Oct. 10, 2025, she extended support to Kologu Primary and JHS, donating 100 reading books to boost the school’s library. She also engaged students through an interactive session, rewarding correct answers with pens. That same day, she hosted a virtual breast cancer awareness session via Google Meet.

“Our goal is simple,” she said. “To transform lives through practical support — education for the young, skills for those without training and mentorship for anyone seeking direction.”

Community Leaders Praise Her Efforts

Winkogo Assemblymember Edward Azuah Akolgo said Amisonga’s work reflects years of dedication to young people and women in the district.

“To me, Freda is a young woman deeply committed to the welfare of others,” he said. “She wants to leave a legacy and inspire the younger ones to pursue their dreams.”

Akolgo said her activism began shortly after she completed senior high school, when she regularly mentored younger students. He recalled their work together when she contested the Miss Upper East pageant.

“She didn’t win the ultimate crown, but she never stopped,” he said. “She continued visiting schools, donating learning materials and encouraging students. She extended her outreach to CHPS compounds, screening mothers and sisters for breast cancer. At her age, the impact she has made is remarkable.”

He urged the public to support her work.

“I’m confident she will grow into a very influential woman in this country — one who serves her community and contributes to Ghana’s development. All she needs is our support.”
