Journalists in Ghana have been urged to adopt balanced, evidence-based reporting to better inform the public, strengthen accountability, and support government reforms aimed at protecting the environment and promoting responsible mining.
This call was made by the General Manager of the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Albert K. Owusu, during the opening of a three-day training workshop on sustainable mining for journalists in Aburi.
In his welcome address, Mr. Owusu stressed that mining remains a key driver of Ghana’s economy through its contribution to government revenue, exports, and employment. However, he noted that illegal and unregulated mining activities continue to threaten the environment, pollute rivers, destroy forests and farmlands, and undermine community livelihoods.
He said addressing these challenges requires joint efforts from policymakers, regulators, industry stakeholders, communities, and, critically, the media.
“Our profession plays a vital role in shaping public understanding and accountability,” he stated. “Balanced, data-driven journalism can inform citizens, support government reform, and promote environmental stewardship.”
Mr. Owusu said the workshop is designed to strengthen journalists’ capacity to provide accurate, insightful, and ethical reporting on mining and natural resource governance.
The workshop, held in Aburi, brought together journalists from the Upper East, Western and Greater Accra Regions under the theme: “Green Mining: Best Practices and Responsible Reporting.”
The three-day training workshop on sustainable mining for editors and reporters is organised by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) and sponsored by the Association of China–Ghana Mining.
Participants, drawn from regions including the Upper East, Western, and Greater Accra, are expected to leave the training better equipped to hold duty-bearers accountable, highlight responsible mining practices, and report objectively on the role of mining in Ghana’s economy and environment. The workshop forms part of GNA’s broader mandate to build a well-informed population and promote national development through credible journalism.
