Bolgatanga Assembly cleans Jubilee Park again, plans new measures to curb persistent waste

For the second consecutive time, the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly has led a cleanup exercise at the Bolgatanga Jubilee Park under the National Sanitation Day initiative, as officials grapple with persistent waste accumulation at the popular public space.

The exercise, carried out with support from the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council, formed part of a nationwide effort launched by President John Dramani Mahama to promote cleanliness and environmental responsibility. Although the activity was originally scheduled for the previous week, it was postponed due to Farmers’ Day celebrations.

Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive Roland Ayoo acknowledged that the Jubilee Park had been cleaned just weeks earlier, yet had once again been littered with plastic waste, bottles and food packaging.

Mr. Ayoo attributed the recurring filth to the park’s heavy use for public events such as church programs and social gatherings, noting that organizers often leave without cleaning up.

“Going forward, we will insist that any group that uses this park for an event must return to tidy the place after the program,” he said.

He also pointed to other contributing factors, including informal parking, passersby discarding waste, and food vendors operating without adequate waste bins. Ayoo said vendors would be required to provide dustbins and educate patrons on proper waste disposal.

He added that structural measures, including narrowing access points to the park, are being considered to better control movement and reduce indiscriminate dumping.

“Change in attitude is a process,” Mr. Ayoo said. “But with education and enforcement, we can keep this place clean and tidy.”
