The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Talensi, John Millim Nabwomya, has shed light on the rationale behind the district’s urgent efforts to position itself for a potential College of Education, should the government give the green light for its establishment.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Mr. Nabwomya explained that the move is a calculated and forward-looking strategy driven by an evident gap in educational infrastructure within the central zone of the Upper East Region.
According to him, while the zone boasts a university, a nursing training college, and a midwifery school, it conspicuously lacks a College of Education.
“When you look at the central zone of the Upper East—Bolgatanga, Bolgatanga East, Bongo, Nabdam, and Talensi—we don’t have a teacher training college,” he stated. “We have one in the eastern zone and another in the western zone, but nothing in the central zone. That is the gap we are trying to address.”
Mr. Nabwomya clarified that the government has not officially announced plans to establish a College of Education in the area. However, he emphasized that the district, together with its Member of Parliament, is actively lobbying while simultaneously preparing ahead of time.
He disclosed that, as part of this preparation, the MP has taken a bold private initiative by converting a 14-bedroom house—originally intended to serve as a guest house—into a makeshift facility that could serve as the nucleus of a future college.
“This is a smart and strategic move,” the DCE noted. “If the government eventually smiles on us, we will already have something on the ground to take advantage of that opportunity.”
Beyond the private initiative, Mr. Nabwomya said the district is also keeping a close eye on an existing E-block infrastructure, which could potentially be repurposed into a training college if government approval is granted.
He stressed that the district does not want to lose any development opportunity, whether for a secondary school or a training college.
Adding to the optimism, the DCE revealed that contracts have already been advertised for additional infrastructure at the E-block site, including two dormitory blocks for boys and girls, a dining hall, and a perimeter fence.
“These developments show our seriousness,” he said. “We are preparing, positioning, and hoping that when the time comes, Talensi and the entire central zone will not be left out.”
