The Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugri Donatus Atanga, has raised serious concerns over the rising incidence of motorbike stealing, snatching, and illicit drug abuse in parts of the BONABOTO area.

Addressing delegates at the BONABOTO 25th Anniversary Congress, the Minister said organised criminal syndicates operating in communities such as Bolgatanga, Tongo, and Bongo pose a growing threat to public safety and social stability.

As Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Mr. Akamugri urged residents to support security agencies as they intensify operations to clamp down on the criminal networks. He also encouraged the formation and strengthening of community watchdog groups to complement formal security efforts.

The Minister further expressed deep concern about the increasing abuse of illicit drugs among the youth, linking the trend to rising mental health challenges and suicide cases in the region.

He called on BONABOTO to play a leading role in public education and sensitisation. He commended LOAD Ghana for establishing a mental health rehabilitation home in Sumbrungu, describing it as a timely intervention that deserves broad stakeholder support.
