The Member of Parliament for the Bongo Constituency in the Upper East Region, Charles Bawa-Dua, has launched the maiden edition of the MP’s Constituency Football Gala, a sporting initiative aimed at identifying young football talent and promoting unity among communities.
The tournament, organized and sponsored by the MP, forms part of his broader vision to harness the constituency’s youthful potential while encouraging sports, recreation and healthy entertainment. It is expected to bring together football teams from across the Bongo Constituency, creating a platform to scout and nurture raw talent for future professional and national opportunities.
Addressing players, match officials, and supporters at the launch, Mr. Bawa-Dua described the gala as a strategic tool for peacebuilding and youth development. He urged participating teams to uphold discipline, fair play, and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
“This competition is about fun, unity, and development,” he said. “All teams should see themselves as one family and play in the spirit of peace.”
Some participants also used the occasion to highlight challenges facing football development in the area. A coach of the Bongo Zone A team noted that while the district has strong interest and talent in football, the poor condition of the local playing field remains a major setback.
“Bongo is a football-loving community, but the park is not in good shape,” the coach said, appealing to authorities, local government and non-governmental organizations to support the construction of a standard football park to help develop local talent.
The football gala is expected to run over several weeks and has generated excitement among youth and sports enthusiasts in the constituency.
