The Talensi District Assembly, led by District Chief Executive John Millim Nabwomya, in collaboration with the Member of Parliament for the area, Daniel Dung Mahama, is set to rehabilitate the main road leading to the Tenzug Hills and Shrine.
The Tenzug Hills and Shrine, a designated UNESCO heritage site, has the potential to become one of Ghana’s most visited tourist destinations if access roads and other ancillary facilities are properly developed.
In an interview with A1 Radio’s Seidu Mutawakil, the Talensi MP acknowledged that improving access to the site, along with the construction of a proper reception area, would enable the assembly to generate revenue to support local development.
“I have contacted the Minister for Tourism to see how we can improve the road. One of the major challenges with the Tenzug Hills is that the road leading to the area is in a deplorable state and needs urgent attention,” Mr. Mahama said.
He added that the existing tourist centre at the site has deteriorated significantly and requires rehabilitation. “We also need to improve the tourist centre building there. It has deteriorated to the point where urgent work is needed,” he noted.
As part of efforts to revitalise the site, Mr. Mahama said plans are underway to intensify advertising and publicity to attract both residents and visitors from outside the region.
“For example, we can place advertisements at the airport. From the Tamale Airport and along the route to the Upper East Region, there should be signboards indicating that this facility exists,” he said.
