The welfare and capacity building of party communicators have been identified as the top priorities of the Upper East Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Ayinbisa Ayamga, as he solicits the support of delegates to retain him in office.
Mr. Ayinbisa, who was appointed as the party’s Regional Communications Director in June 2022, said that since assuming office, he has worked closely with party members to strengthen the communication machinery of the NPP in the Upper East Region. He noted that during his tenure, he recruited more than 15 communicators who had expressed interest in joining the communication team but had previously lacked the opportunity.
“Some of these communicators are today doing very well, both when we were in power and even now that we are in opposition,” he said.
Speaking on Bolga FM, 102.7MHz, Mr. Ayinbisa lamented the lack of logistical and welfare support for NPP communicators during the party’s time in government. He disclosed that even as Regional Communications Director, he did not receive basic logistics such as a bicycle, not to mention adequate support for communicators.
“It was worrying that while we were in government, our communicators were not properly resourced. Meanwhile, the NDC, even in opposition, provided their constituency communication officers with motorbikes and their regional communications officer with a vehicle,” he stated.
He recalled that many communicators struggled with unemployment, limited business opportunities, and challenges in furthering their education, stressing that the party was unable to adequately respond to these needs. Mr. Ayinbisa attributed the situation partly to neglect by some party leaders at the time.
“Communicators were ignored, yet they were at the forefront defending and projecting the party. If I am retained, I will ensure that the welfare of communicators is given the attention it deserves,” he assured.
Beyond welfare, Mr. Ayinbisa said capacity building would be a major focus of his leadership. According to him, strengthening the skills and knowledge of communicators is critical to effectively propagating the party’s message and holding the government accountable.
“We struggled to even organise meetings because of lack of resources. Capacity building will empower our communicators to do their work better,” he added.
The New Patriotic Party, at its National Delegates Conference held in Accra in July 2025, resolved to make the position of Director of Communications an elective one, instead of by appointment. The party said the move was intended to allow grassroots members to choose who they believe can best communicate on their behalf and to eliminate perceptions of favouritism associated with appointments.
However, the positions of Deputy Communications Directors will remain appointive.
