Bolgatanga East DCE admits streetlight challenges, assures residents of imminent relief

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bolgatanga East, Jacob Abugre Aka-Eri, has acknowledged persistent streetlight challenges across the district, particularly along major roads, but has assured residents that steps are being taken to address the situation in the near future.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Day Break Upper East on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, Mr. Aka-Eri described the situation as worrying, noting that even sections of major highways passing through the district remain poorly lit.

“The issue of streetlights is a challenge. When I look at the main road, I am concerned about how dark it is. Even though the road falls under the Highways Authority, it is within my district, and we must be concerned about it,” he said.

According to the DCE, the District Assembly has engaged the Ministry of Energy for support and submitted a list of roads in urgent need of street lighting. He disclosed that while the Ministry recently supplied materials for streetlight installation, some of the roads initially selected already had functioning lights, prompting the Assembly to intervene.

“Recently, materials were brought for streetlight installation, but some of the roads selected already had lights. I had to call the contractor to address that,” he explained.

Mr. Aka-Eri said discussions with the contractor are ongoing to redirect the installations to darker and more vulnerable roads within the district.

“Today, we will be engaging the contractor to ensure that the streetlights are installed on roads that are actually dark,” he said, adding that the Assembly is not relying solely on central government support.

He stressed that the Bolgatanga East District Assembly also plans to procure additional streetlights using its own resources to extend coverage to more communities.

“We are still pushing for more support, and within the Assembly, we also plan to procure additional streetlights to light up other areas,” he noted.

Asked whether residents should expect a complete solution in the near future, the DCE was cautiously optimistic.

“We cannot assure that all routes will be lit immediately, but we will ensure that the major roads are properly lit,” he assured.
