Former Burkina Faso Ambassador warns against ethnic bias ahead of NPP flagbearer race

Ghana’s former Ambassador to Burkina Faso, Boniface Gambila Adagbila, has cautioned New Patriotic Party (NPP) members against discussions or actions that discriminate—directly or indirectly—against individuals based on their ethnicity. He warned that such behavior is unconstitutional and undermines party unity.

Speaking on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show with Gerard Asagi, Mr. Adagbila said, “We are electing only one leader to represent us. When we are choosing a leader, we must focus on qualifications and vision, not whether someone belongs to a majority or minority group. Any approach that prioritizes ethnicity becomes discriminatory and offensive.”

Mr. Adagbila, who previously contested the Nabdam Parliamentary seat on behalf of the NPP, added that Ghana is a diverse nation, and the constitution does not allow segregation or discrimination. He suggested that some conversations and positions taken by individuals seeking leadership, or by those speaking on their behalf, may be unconstitutional and counterproductive to party unity.

He emphasized that the party’s constitution should guide the process, and all qualified members should be encouraged to vote for the candidate of their choice. “The flagbearership role is not a birthright for people from certain regions or majority groups. Every supporter should focus on the candidate’s vision and capability,” he said.
