The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has raised concerns about non-functioning traffic and street lights across the region, noting that the situation has contributed to several road accidents, particularly at the SSNIT traffic intersection and other busy junctions in Bolgatanga.
Speaking at the first regional press soiree under the current NDC administration on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the Minister said many traffic lights are either stuck on amber or completely out of service.
He disclosed that faulty ones have been identified and prepared for repairs, while engagements are ongoing with the Ministry of Roads to decentralize maintenance contracts to ensure quicker response to faults. “When maintenance is decentralized, faults can be attended to promptly and efficiently,” he said.
On street lighting, Mr. Atanga announced that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) has received and distributed 3,413 boxes of 150-watt LED street lights to municipal and district assemblies across the region.
He explained that the intervention is aimed at improving visibility, deterring crime, and enhancing public safety, especially in high-risk and poorly lit communities.
He acknowledged, however, that challenges persist due to illegal electrical connections, defective photocells, and vandalism. Repair works are currently ongoing in the Bolgatanga Municipality, with faulty lamps being replaced. The Minister assured residents that the RCC, in collaboration with the assemblies, is taking decisive steps to restore full functionality and ensure safer roads and communities.
